Greetings from Paradise! Detroit, Michigan Watercolor and gouache on paper 8" x 11" 2023Greetings from Paradise! Detroit, Michigan is a painting series and Risograph printed postcard book edition named for the Paradise Valley neighborhood in Detroit, Michigan. Paradise Valley was the business and entertainment center of a densely-populated African-American residential area known as Black Bottom torn down
and displaced by the freeway construction and urban renewal projects of the 1950s and 60s. The project aims to visually document the institutional erasure of a community’s historic memory through the juxtaposition and collaging of archival images from Paradise Valley and Black Bottom with modern day site photographs of the highways, overpasses, streets and parking lots that replaced them.
