OPENING RECEPTION: Thursday, March 3,   6 – 8 pm
Juror Talk & Awards: 6:30 pm

A show investigating borders; where do we find them and how do they shape us? Why do we embrace or reject them? When does a unifying contour become a divisional line? The exhibit, jurored by Sarah Rose Sharp, features work by artists from the Great Lakes region including David Burke, David Cuatlacuatl, Mary Fortuna, Maureen Joyce, Lindsey Landfried, Yusuf Lateef, K A Letts, Zach Lihatsh, Mary Mazziotti, Laurenn McCubbin, Sidney Mullis, Gabrielle Roach, Whitney Sage, Jina Seo, Meagan Shein, Kathryn Shinko and Jessica Tenbusch. Hosted by River House Arts and Owens Community College Center for Fine and Performing Arts.

I was honored that my series work, Prayer Flags for Detroit, was included in this fabulously curated exhibition. Read an excerpt about my work from Sarah below, but for more information about the exhibition from the juror, Sarah Rose Sharp, visit: http://sarahrosesharp.com/2016/03/04/1735/

“Borders” – Opening Remarks

“Whatever the reason, there are a few pieces in the show that really examine what a painting is—here I’m thinking of Prayer Flags for Detroit by Whitney Sage. These little portraits of Detroit buildings on salvaged domestic fabrics seem to me to thread a path between the domestic qualities of laundry on the line, and every painting that has ever been set to canvas. They also, as the title suggests, are flags, which speak to a very personal kind of representation as well as collective identity.”
